What are Christmas lights?

Christmas lights are one of the festive sights. As November and December roll in, you may find strings of lights all over the place - Christmas trees, houses, bushes, dwarf trees, and even the occasional passing car! Looking back at how people decorated houses and trees with lamps at the time, you'll see that most people used small 120-volt incandescent light bulbs. Each bulb is a 5 or 10 watt bulb, the same kind of lights you see at night. You can still find these string lights, but they're not that common anymore, for three main reasons: They consume a lot of electricity. If you have a string of 50 5-watt bulbs, this light uses 250 watts! Most people decorate trees with two or three strings of lights, and houses with 10 strings, so you can imagine how much electricity this uses! So the entire string of lights won't flicker. Obviously, these bulbs are not shunt (if they were, the rest of the bulbs wouldn't flash), so when the flash bulb goes off, the rest of the bulbs go off accordingly, unless you replace the flash bulb. More sophisticated bulbs have 16-function controllers that allow you to control the bulb in a variety of interesting patterns. In these systems, you'll typically find control boxes that drive four separate mini-strings. The four light strings are connected staggered, not one after the other. If you take apart the control box, you will find that its construction is very simple. It contains an integrated circuit, four transistors or triacs—one switch drives a string of lights. The integrated circuit only needs to turn on the triac to light up one of the light strings. By properly sequencing the triacs, a wide variety of lighting effects can be designed!
